What We Wish We Knew Before Going Full-Time in Our RV

Going full-time in an RV is exciting, freeing, and—let’s be honest—a little overwhelming.

You’re trading square footage for freedom, routines for adventure, and predictable bills for the unknown. But with that freedom comes some surprises — and a few things that experienced RVers say they really wish they’d known sooner.

A couple camping in from of an RV

1. “I Didn’t Know My Auto Policy Wouldn’t Cover My RV Like a Home.”

This one stings — because so many RVers find out the hard way.

When you move into your RV full time, your insurance needs change. It’s no longer just a vehicle — it’s your home, your office, your everything. Standard auto or part-time RV policies don’t include:

  • Long-term liability coverage

  • Personal belongings inside the RV

  • Medical payments for guests

  • Coverage while parked at a campground

If you’re living in your rig most of the year (150+ nights), you need a full-time RV insurance policy — and it’s not something most car insurance companies offer.

2. “We Thought We'd Spend Less, But Repairs and Insurance Surprises Added Up.”

Living small doesn’t always mean living cheap.

Unexpected issues pop up:

  • Tire blowouts

  • Slide malfunctions

  • Roof leaks

  • Generator failures

One of the best pieces of advice we’ve heard: insure the big stuff, budget for the rest. With the right policy, you’re covered for the worst-case scenarios — including emergency lodging if your RV becomes unlivable.

3. “I Wish Someone Told Us to Ask for Replacement Cost Coverage.”

This one’s huge. Imagine your RV is totaled in an accident. Do you:

  • Get the current (depreciated) value?

  • Or get enough to replace it with something similar?

Replacement cost or agreed value coverage can make or break your recovery. Many stanard auto policies don’t include this — but specialty full-time policies often can, if you ask for it.

4. “We Didn’t Realize Campground Liability or Full Time RV Insurance Was Even a Thing.”

When you live in your RV, you’re responsible for what happens around it — not just while driving it.

If someone trips over a hose, falls down your RV steps, or gets hurt at your campsite, you could be held liable. Full-time RV insurance includes liability coverage for situations like this, much like a homeowner’s policy would.

5. “We Didn’t Know the Right Agent Could Make All the Difference.”

Some insurance agents just plug your info into a car insurance system and hope for the best.

But full-time RV insurance is a specialty — and it’s all we do.

We know the right questions to ask. We work with carriers that understand your lifestyle. And we make sure you’re never surprised by what’s not covered.
