The Ultimate Full-Time RV Insurance Checklist

Not all RV insurance is created equal — especially if you live in your RV full time.

If your motorhome or trailer is your primary residence, you need more than a basic policy. You need coverage that protects your home, your belongings, your guests, and your ability to stay on the road.

Use this checklist to find out if your current insurance really covers everything it should.

Blue Checklist

✅ 1. Is Your Policy Labeled as “Full-Time” Coverage?

Start here. If your current insurance is through a traditional auto insurer or your policy doesn’t specifically say “full-time” RV coverage, you may be missing key protections.

Full-time coverage typically applies if:

  • You live in your RV 150+ nights per year

  • You don’t have another permanent residence

  • You use your RV as your mailing address or main home

✅ 2. Do You Have Personal Liability Protection?

This is one of the biggest differences between part-time and full-time RV insurance.

Full-time RV liability covers you if:

  • Someone is injured in or around your RV (slip-and-fall, burns, dog bites, etc.)

  • You’re parked long-term at a campground or RV park

  • You’re responsible for damage to someone else’s property while parked

Without this, you could be personally sued — and your auto policy likely won’t help.

✅ 3. Are Your Belongings Inside the RV Covered?

If you live in your RV, you likely have valuables inside — laptops, cameras, tools, cookware, and more.

Ask your insurance provider:

  • Is my personal property inside the RV covered?

  • How much coverage do I have?

  • Is it replacement cost or actual cash value?

Full-time policies often include this, but many basic RV or auto policies do not.

✅ 4. Do You Have Emergency Expense Coverage?

What happens if your RV is in the shop after a covered claim and you can’t live in it?

Full-time policies can include coverage for:

  • Hotel stays

  • Temporary rentals

  • Transportation or meals during repairs

It’s your lifeline when you have nowhere else to go.

✅ 5. Are You Covered When Parked Long-Term?

Auto policies assume you’re driving your RV. But if you’re:

  • Stationary at a campground

  • On private land for months at a time

  • Hooked up long-term like a home

You may need coverage that includes:

  • Stationary options

  • Campsite liability

  • Weather-related risks

✅ 6. Does Your Policy Include Medical Payments to Others?

This covers medical expenses if a guest is injured near your RV — without the need to prove legal liability.

It’s a must-have for full-time RVers who host family, friends, or even neighbors at the campground.

✅ 7. Do You Have Enough Total Loss or Replacement Coverage?

If your RV is totaled, you want to know:

  • Will I get the full value or just what it’s worth today?

  • Can I replace it with a similar RV?

  • What about modifications or add-ons — are they covered?

Many full-time RV policies include total loss replacement or agreed value options — but not all do.

Don’t Guess — Know You’re Protected

Most auto insurance companies aren’t set up to handle the unique needs of full-time RVers. And most part-time RV policies don’t go far enough.

If your RV is your home, you need coverage that treats it like one — not just like a vehicle.
